Magic Hummingbird

Once there was a hummingbird always asking why
So we sat and talked I thought he might teach me to fly
He looked surprised and said, "I'm not a duck, I'm a tiny
shining, shimmering hummingbird"
Don't you worry about a thing, just rise and fall
Don't you worry about a thing, just ride it all

So I told him stories 'bout the Magic Hummingbird
My shiny little friend perked up with every word
"Maybe what we need is a 747 or some
big, big bird to help you fly away
Don't you worry about a thing, just rise and fall
Don't you worry about a thing, just ride it all

I asked him what to do, he said "Do nothing at all
Just climb on up, we're gonna rise and fall
Don't you worry about a thing just rise and fall
Don't you worry about a thing just ride it all

Thomas Cain

I wrote this song because I wanted to tell a story about birds.  It's traditional knowledge that hummingbirds are magical.  The way they move, up and down, rise and fall.

As happens when I'm songwriting, the story took over - the delightful friendship with a hummingbird who is worried that I might be stupid and try to ride him, but I want him to teach me to fly.  The song is an invitation to see ourselves coming to the party — to join in with the other creatures.  To listen to them.  To build friendships with such lovely creatures.

That's the beauty of it, being invited into nature.  When we do, we don't have to worry about a thing, rise and fall, when we are in the place just right.
