We often see discourse as taking place on a rational level - attempts to persuade rebuffed by counter arguments - and we then become baffled when compelling arguments, evidence, logic, and reason fail to persuade otherwise reasonable people. This is because we are not always aware of the non-rational factors at play beneath the surface: the intuitions and sentiments that shape how persuasive arguments seem to us. In matters of politics, policy, and tribe, the surface level discourse obscures this layer of non-rational factors and keeps us from addressing the real barriers to lasting persuasion.
