Remembering Mia Love, former Utah MOC, LDS Action Team Guest Speaker, March 17, 2021
By Thomas Cain

On March 17, 2021, former Congresswoman Mia Love, told her story and her commitment to her values, her family, and to care for creation. Her parents emigrated from Haiti. Her parents, determined Republicans, voted for Ronald Reagan and appreciated values of self-sufficieny, to give to others, and to give back. All of this taught Mia “I don’t know everything – and I might learn something.”

When Ms. Love was elected to Congress, she joined the Climate Solutions Caucus. She also met Tom Moyer from Citizens Climate Lobby, who said “We just want to talk.” Her experience was that environmentalists were adversarial. “Why aren’t you doing this? Or doing that?” CCL’ approach was “We don’t care what side of the aisle you’re on.” The question was: can we get more Republicans involved?

During midterm election, her opponents succeeded by creating negative advertising that took clips and segments out of context. The Climate Solutions Caucus GOP members went from 42 to 7 in one year. Political groups targets those who were trying to do this work.

Mia Love expressed her faith. “Don’t give in. We have to preserve this great land. We have to keep on approaching other people in a way that uplifts them. Be a proud Republican advocate for environmental stewardship. You have to make a choice whether the issue is important to you. Others make the choice that power is more important. Which is more important, power or the issue [of creation care]?”
